In a private meeting with 10 journalists at his Minneapolis studio on Saturday night, Prince discussed some of the hot topics on his mind in the music industry. No phones or recording devices where allowed in the studio at all, so only a few quotes managed to escape from the event, but the one that has stuck out the most was Prince's advice to young artists looking to grow. He urges them to not seek out a record contract, but instead stay independent and free because "record contracts are just like—I'm gonna say the word—slavery." "I would tell any young artist...don't sign," Prince continued. He also took the time to defend Jay Z and TIDAL, who he has just signed a deal with."

Sistren, I don't like when celebrities make out-of-touch comments like Prince said. Working for a label is a choice. Slavery is not. If you don't like working for a label, you find ways to stay independent to retain artistic integrity, Prince. You have choices Princes.

He's has a point though. When you're under a label you are binded by a contract and often they can be harsh.

Look at all those horrible things we've heard from some artists like TLC, Kesha, Jojo and so on. Labels can be evil.

it's really hard when you don't have a label though. The only chance would be to set up a deal that follows exactly your ideas of your artistry, which is impossible most of the time.

It seems Lana is one of the few ones who doesn't need to follow the basic rules of the industry.

I love Prince but he's always been extremely dramatic and off-base with the slavery comparisons. He also once said the internet would be a fad, so what does he know.

Prince is crazy.Tidal just sounds like a bunch of celebrities whining. No one cares that you have to buy 4 houses instead of 5. That's not the consumers fault and they shouldn't have to pay a premium for it.

Prince has always had it good, from the start his record company allowed him to write, produce, and record everything.

Jayz as an artist has been indie for almost all his career. He came into the industry as indie artist who could not get a record contract, so he and his friends formed RocAfella. Roc Nation is an indie label with distribution via Universal.

OT, Prince is always there to speak his mind and I'm sure he knows what he's talking about. It's funny some of you are skeptical, but there's a billion and one stories of artists being forced to sing a song a certain way.

Prince has removed his music from the Internet. So it's hard to watch his music videos. In fact you have to watch his music videos illegally. He removed his music from Spotify which makes it harder to get into him unless you have Tidal. Not many teenagers or young adults will go into Tidal.

This makes his music so much more harder to find. Why do you think artists like The Beatles, MJ and so on will always be popular with younger folk? Because they have made their music easier to obtain. You could go on YouTube and find all their videos, performances and so on. Which makes it easier to like and appreciate them.

In a few more years Prince will either have to get with the times or even less people will know his music.
