i'm really empathetic so I usually get emotional about it

It's completely and utterly pathetic if it's a conscious ploy for attention. It is utterly deplorable. Anyone who does it is scum. It causes a lot of people to be skeptical of those who genuinely ARE struggling with something like suicide and can really invalidate their experiences. I have no respect for anyone who does this.

That said, it's very difficult to prove or know. If someone tells me they're struggling with suicide, I always give them the benefit of the doubt. I'd rather waste my time helping someone who faked it for attention than fail to help someone who truly needed that help. Suicide is something I take very seriously

I mean, tell someone in real life about it. Like a significant other or a parent or your best friend. Don't make a big deal about it on Twitter.

I'm so sorry, that's horrible Suicide is never something to NOT be taken seriously, but a lot of people who don't understand things like suicide/depression seem to think it's for attention most of the time (unless the person actually tries to kill him/herself, in which case it might be too late. And sometimes they think it's fake even then) which is terrible since, most of the time, it really is a genuine cry for help I hope you're doing better now

Seriously, I talk to that person and try to make him/her feel better. Refer them to suicide prevention groups

Said by someone with absolutely no understanding of how suicide and depression works. Treating someone struggling with suicide/depression like this is a major CAUSE of attempts.

I don't think it's bad to threaten suicide for attention, I think it depends on WHY they need the attention. If you're on the verge of killing yourself then you need all the attention you can get from people who can help you.

When I was suicidal I only told my closest friends because I knew they'd be able to help me out of it. The way I think of it is that maybe the people who threaten suicide on social media don't have a solid support system around them, so they reach out to the internet in the hopes that they'll manage to reach someone that can help them. If that's the case then I can't hold it against them for trying to find help.

That's not the kind of attention people in this thread are talking about (at least not for me). THAT kind of cry for help is absolutely the right thing to do, actually. I was talking people who aren't actually suicidal and use it as a tool for sympathy/to get more people paying attention to them (just for attentions' sake), which is completely wrong

Not to pretend I know your personal life, but how can you be sure that it's not genuine? The entire way you phrase this just comes across as very insensitive
