This song was an obvious Birthday rip-off, not to mention the video used the same idea as the one introduced by Katy. Why did no one discuss it publicly? Why did Sugar become so huge? Discuss.
I heard the song plenty of times when I was in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore this summer. My cousin even said Sugar is the popular English song in Taiwan this year
604 million Youtube views means that they connected with the GP big time
Because GP likes Maroon 5's generic s**ts. The more generic the more GP likes it.
Personally, I can't stand Adam voice at all. He sounds so annoying in my opinion, but oh well, the GP seems likes him A LOT!
It's definitely puzzling that Maroon 5 copied Katy's song and video concept, yet noone talked about it.
I've said this before about them, but most of their career works as a perfect example for sexism. They dragged MTV publicly, yet they got away with it. Adam Levine is a douchebag, yet he gets away with it. Their music is bad and generic, yet they succeed. And they also get away with things women wouldn't, like copying others, not progressing artistically, selling out, getting naked for views / sales and saying "I hate America" on national television... Puzzling
I don't understand how it was such a big hit. It's just as awful as Birthday and it should've had the same run.
Plus the backlash from copying the song and video.
If a female artist had done that, the media would've been all over it.
I guess the GP just loves anything generic that Maroon 5 throws at them. The one good song they released this era is flopping now, so yeah

All of this.
At best, one can only argue that Sugar is slightly better than Birthday, but that does not explain the difference in their chart performance anyway. I mean, they are so similar after all.

Birthday is so much better I can't believe a rip off song like this actually performed better
