Disney-Marvel’s “Ant-Man” is marching to a solid $65 million weekend at the U.S. box office while Amy Schumer’s “Trainwreck” is overperforming with a $35 million launch frame, according to early Friday estimates.
“Ant-Man” took in $6.4 million in Thursday-night preview screenings — comparable to the $6.2 million for Universal-Illumination Entertainment’s “Minions.” Forecasts for “Ant-Man” had been in the $60 million to $65 million range at 3,856 locations, most of which are in 3D.
Paul Rudd, Michael Douglas and Corey Stoll star in the comic book adaptation, directed by Peyton Reed. Rudd plays a down-on-his-luck thief who uses technology to transform himself into the size of an insect.
“Ant-Man” carries a $130 million pricetag and is also opening in 50 foreign markets this weekend.
“Trainwreck” launched with $1.8 million in Thursday night previews. Early Friday numbers from matinees indicated that the raunchy comedy will outperform forecasts, which were in the $18 million to $22 million range. The well-reviewed “Trainwreck” looks likely to exceed the first weekend of Fox’s R-rated “Spy,” which opened with a $29 million on June 5-7. “Spy,” which was similarly embraced by critics, showed impressive staying power and has hit $105 million.
Whoa, I don't think anyone saw Trainwreck opening with $35 million! Go Amy Schumer, and shows the female audience is underestimated yet again. We'll see if these #'s hold. And luckily Ant-Man didn't bomb.
65 million for Ant Man is fine. Even as big as Marvel is, no one should have expected a Guardians of the Galaxy type opening. It's a movie about an obscure character and Paul Rudd is playing the superhero, who isn't much of a box office draw himself, so this will easily be his biggest opening. An opening similar to the first Thor or Captain America is good enough.

This. These numbers are numbers that can easily be grown upon. And with him getting featured in other Marvel movies, the numbers will grow when the sequel comes out.
Ant-Man would never be a massive hit or completely bomb. This is around what everyone expected, I'm sure Marvel is glad that it's released (after nearly a decade), made profit and has another known character now.
Ant-Man will end up grossing $140M+ in the US. That's pretty good for an introduction film. Most people don't know anything about the character. The next one will open larger. Especially if he is added to the roster of one of the other Marvel films before its release. Paul Rudd just crossed the line to action star.
I thought was silly like why? why ant? i LOVE paul rudd but ant superhero is just nope! BUT IM GLAD MY FRIEND DRAGGED TO THE THEATERS, coz ITS REALLY GOOD! It deserves to smash tbh
