The South Carolina Senate has voted overwhelmingly to remove the Confederate flag from the statehouse grounds.

Senate members voted 37-3 on Monday to remove the flag, according to the Post and Courier.

The state House must still vote to remove the flag. That vote is expected on Tuesday.

I mean, this is good and all, but this flag debate has always been kind of a distraction from the actual issues at play here, hasn't it? No real progress has been made and I can already feel the complacence settling in now that this has been ruled on. Everyone's gonna be like "yaaaay racism in America's finally over! "

Both chambers need 2/3. Since the Senate is done, the House is 124 members and we need 83. There are 78 Republicans and 46 Democrats, but seeing the runaway victory today I think or at least hope we'll get a comfy cushion of a victorious margin.

It'll get one more vote in the Senate today, then go to the House where the press expects it to pass and become law as early as Thursday. Governor Haley said she'll call for its removal as soon as the bill is passed.

I agree with what you are saying but I do think it is great that we have started to acknowledge how wrong it is to raise flags based entire around slavery and treason on federal property. Maybe if we keep this discussion up and bring it to more things similar, people will start to think more about the racial institutions that surround us. I know this issue with the confederate flag has had a lot of people who used to be really passive and uncaring about it start to stand strong against it.

This debate is STILL on. It started this morning. The black caucus said it wasn't even going to speak, but they did and they are going IN.

There were around 60 amendments proposed so the final vote is likely tomorrow.

Some of them are talking about Senator Pinckney murdered at the church. Some want to cry you can tell.

Many in the Senate had said the events changed their minds on how to vote on the flag. If it happens in the House too then hopefully they will have the 83 needed.
