MGMT has revealed that their new album is influenced by
Lady Gaga and
Kanye West.
MGMT enjoyed a spectacular rise to fame. Forming while at college in Brooklyn the band were quickly snapped up by a major label, stunned by their near effortless grasp of other worldly synth pop.
Debut album 'Oracular Spectacular' turned the band into stars. Now returning to the studio, the group are working on new album 'Congratulations' which apparently sounds like Lady Gaga and Kanye West.
Speaking to Spin Magazine MGMT revealed that the new material is informed by their recent rise to fame. "We were a group of guys in their mid-20s touring around the world and of course we are going to party".
"But after a while we all learned that you can't just keep doing that over and over, and the new record addresses those issues".
MGMT revealed that the band is working on a startling new pop direction. "On some of the new songs, I found myself thinking about Lady GaGa or Kanye West, and what their ultimate goal is," he added.
"This sounds cheesy, but for us it's really just about the music and getting people to hear what we have to say. I'm sure it's about the music for those people, too… but fame… it's an interesting career."
Previously, MGMT stated that they did not intend to release any singles from 'Congratulations' preferring instead to let it stand as a complete entity in its own right.
MGMT is set to release 'Congratulations' later this year.
