Even though I don't really care for her; this is a big deal, a huge, history making deal!
The American Ballet Theatre (ABT) is "America's Ballet Company," kind of like how the Dallas Cowboys are supposedly "America's team." There are only a handful of super prestigious, super famous ballet companies in the US, namely NYC ballet, ABT, Joffrey, and San Francisco Ballet. Principle Dancer is the highest rank of any ballet company, and no black dancer has ever attained it at ABT or any of those elite companies . . . Until today.
Misty is already pretty famous inside and outside the dance world. She's been featured in numerous commercial campaigns
and she was just featured on the cover of TIME magazine for the 100 most influential issue
. . . Has written a children's book, as well a a memoir.
She's been employed by ABT for almost 15 years and has worked her way up from the corps to soloist. So, this promotion is a long time coming.
Congrats to her, and may she have more continued success!
She didn't start doing ballet until she was 13, and almost 20 years later, she's a principal dancer in a prestigious company. Her story is very fascinating.

She's not the most artistic or brilliant dancer, but she's a hard worker and a smart, shrewd worker. The way she climbed the ranks is very 21st century genius! Her PR campaign has been masterful! Print, TV, social media. Besides David Hallberg, Misty was arguably the most famous dancer at ABT well before this promotion and it's translated into ticket sales for the company. So, there would've been a massive backlash if she had been passed over again for principal. When she guested at Washington Ballet and danced Odette/Odile in Swan Lake, it was all over the media! It was even covered on 60 Minutes!
Her interview today, after the announcement, was really touching! #Fairytaleending
