A WBUR poll showed that 49% of Bostonians oppose the Olympics; 39% support. It's make or break time for the bid.

Eh, Boston is a poor place to bring the Olympics if they're going to be US.

Boston will be sucking money from public projects for a decade to pay for this. Then when it's over they will have a bunch of venues that are empty that need to be maintained. Sounds like a good deal.

Most of the time, the cities that host the Olympics don't even earn back the billions that they spend.

And this is exactly why I'm happy that more people oppose the bid than support it.

The world is finally realizing that hosting the Olympics is not a wise thing to do. That's why only two cities remain in the bidding for the 2022 Winter Olympics.

Maybe they should pick cities that need a boost and do a lottery and have the feds pay for it like a renewal thing.

Sochi scared off plenty of interested bidders for the 2022 games with it's $50 billion price tag for hosting. Both 2024 and 2026 have lot's of interested cities. (for now, at least.)

The IOC got it's wake up call too, that western countries aren't going to bend over backwards for their little 'spectacle' anymore.

I thought they were dropping it and giving the bid to LA

Why they would choose Boston of all cities is beyond me. It should've been Miami/LA/Atlanta

The Olympics can be a money pit, but only is poor planning is involved.

The US has never lost money due to an Olympics. Salt Lake had a profit of $101m. Atlanta had a profit of $10m. LA had a profit of $250m, and that was without half of the competition showing up.

The last two Summer Olympics both made profits as well. London made £52.8m, and Beijing made $146m.

There just has to be a precedent for very well planning of the venues, both before and after the Olympics. Part of what made Athens so awful was that they didn't have any plan for the venues after 2004. Now almost all of them are unused. Poor planning in places like Athens and Sydney, as well as the mess Rio has gone through so far, are what has created such a negative stigma against hosting.

In larger cities, especially those that have hosted before (London, LA) it is easier to convert some venues and plan off of past usage in their previous hosting experience.

All of the time they don't even come close. The 2012 Olympics were supposed to have costed £8 billion and before they occurred people were saying we would be lucky to get £1 billion back

So it's looking like Boston doesn't even really want the games any more. I'm so pissed that the USOC picked Boston before getting the support of city leaders. Like, 2024 is the USA's best shot in a long time and it feels like we're blowing it

There's a rumor going around that the USOC may change the bid to Los Angeles if support for Boston doesn't grow.

And.....the mayor refuses to sign the plan.
