I think I like parts of Smoke & Mirrors more than Night Visions. Sure there isn't a song as great as Radioactive, but there really isn't anything as bad as On Top of The World either.
I think the problem with the Sophomore albums is that artists usually are making their sound more consistent and smoother. The sophomore albums usually don't have as many stand out tracks (good or bad) and usually suffer because of that. Also, the sophomore albums usually are delivered after more intense time restraints.
As far as sophomore jinxes/slumps go...
I'm thinking Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded and Major Lazer's second album (Free the Universe)
