37 years after producing I feel love for Donna Summer , the piece that changed the history of pop music, Giorgio Moroder returns with an album of new tracks entitled Déjà vu leaving June 16 for Sony Music. Winner of three Oscars (for the soundtrack to Flashdance , Midnight Express and Top Gun ) and three Grammy awards, Moroder retired from the music business over the past 80 years, the height of success. Since then he has dedicated himself to golf and the crossword puzzle: a little 'well-deserved rest in fact.
But in 2013 something changes: his collaboration with Daft Punk called by Giorgio Moroder become an international success and the album random access memories of the French duo won the Grammy Award for best album of the year. Since then it has received proposals from three well-majors to record a new album. And here we are in 2015: Giorgio has worked with some of the most important names in the international music scene including Sia, Kylie Minogue , Britney Spears and Charli XCX. Here's what he told to AMICA.IT of its past, the present and above all its future projects.
Work in the music industry since the early 70s, what has changed since then in the process of working on an album?
30 years ago you went into the studio with an idea and began to work on the songs, they wrote the text, the words , often with the singer. Now 80% is done via email. For example, for the piece of Kylie Minogue my co-producer worked on the voice in London, I've ended up in Los Angeles production, then I sent the piece to my musicians in Germany. It's all a tour (laughs). The singers do not come together as before, not working more closely with them. At least not always.
Followers many years perhaps he wanted a new album in the wake of your early work, but you as a manufacturer you may have wanted to test you, to do something new. How have you handled the construction of the new material?
When I started working on the new album I wanted to do music disk, after collaboration with Daft Punk seemed a natural choice. Then I tried a little 'with the EDM (electronic dance music) and the sounds of "now", but on songs like the collaboration with Sia (who gave the title to the album Déjà Vu) are all typical instruments of music disc. In the end I think I've got a combination of modern sounds and sounds back.
You recently spoke of a possible return to film music, can you tell us something more?
Yes, I'm talking with a director and a budget important but I can not go into details. I am currently writing the soundtrack for a video game Tron for Disney.
Other commitments, after the promotion of the album?
In short I will start to work on a musical a bit 'in the style of Mamma Mia! . I will use my 6 or 7 pieces and fifteen new: it will all be based on dance music. I started working with Lana del Rey , but the fact is that sometimes you feel then disappears for six months ( laughs ). We'll see.
There are rumors of a possible collaboration with your Lady Gaga ...
We have not even started yet, unfortunately. Before she was on tour, I'm busy now. But when I get back to Los Angeles, where he calls me ...
Would you like to close with a few questions "rapid-fire"?
Let's try!
Star Wars or Star Trek?
Star Wars.
John Williams or Howard Shore?
John Williams, absolutely.
Titanic or Avatar?
Titanic.
Katy Perry or Taylor Swift?
Taylor Swift.
And finally: Gloria Gaynor or Diana Ross?
I can not choose! I worked with both! I say both.
