I dream about tsunamis a lot.... a lot. There's nothing more terrifying except maybe an asteroid hitting earth.

Well I'm personally not afraid of them since I don't live in a place where they happen. But yes, they would be scary if you were there when it was happening

I would say they have the highest potential for destruction over any other natural disaster other than a super volcano. Most people think only earthquakes form tsunamis but landslides have caused the worst recorded ones.

Tsunamis don't stop until they hit land and they will wrap around the earth several times. We have only really seen one major tsunami in our lifetime and it killed over 250,000 people; it was not even a big one in the history books with a wave height of 40ft.

Tsunamis are long period waves so if you were in the ocean you won't even know it passed it might be only several inches in height but 100 miles long. So imagine that water reaching shore slowing down and the rest of the water behind it still goes fast that is what builds the massive tidal wave. The tsunami that hit Alaska due to a landslide in the 50's was in bay, essentially a bathtub; the wave reached over 1700 feet at its peak.

A volcano avalanche in Sicily 8,000 years ago dropped 6 cubic miles of rock and sediment into the water, to put that in to perspective it could cover Manhattan entirely in debris all the way up to the top of the Empire State Building. This sent waves traveling up to 450 mph across the Mediterranean they were as high as 130 feet when they hit shore. This was much more powerful than the Indonesian tsunami. If this same event happened again today and it could, Southern Italy would be gone 15 minutes, 1 hour later Greece's western coasts would be wiped out, an hour later, Benghazi would be hammered. After 3 1/2 hours the waves would have crossed the Mediterranean to slam in to the coasts of Israel, Lebanon and Syria. This already has happened just 8000 years ago. Imagine the death and destruction if it were today.

The likely hood of an asteroid strike is so small, it hitting land even smaller, so if it did hit it would probably hit one of the oceans and cause what? A Tsunami.
