The Hummingbird 100: Results Are In!

Voted as the #1 song in the Hummingbird100 hottest female countdown, Aretha Franklin’s Respect is the clear winner in the national poll broadcast on MAX on Sunday November 29th.

Launched to highlight the importance of females within the music industry, the Hummingbird100 attracted over 62,000 votes with over 5,500 songs nominated for the countdown. After seven weeks of voting, Australian’s went online forming a fascinating list of the greatest songs by women of all time.

Pink, and Beyonce Knowles (coupled with Destiny’s Child) both scored seven entries in the countdown and Madonna held a top presence with four entries, three of which were in the top 20. There is a lack of Australian females represented in the Hummingbird100 with Kate Miller-Heidke Last Day On Earth ranking highest at #55, Kylie Minogue Can’t Get You Out Of My Head at #57 and Sia Breathe Me at #81.

#1 Aretha Franklin – Respect

Originally written and released in 1965 by Stax, featuring Otis Redding, Respect was recorded by Aretha Franklin two years later, with her sisters on backing vocals.

This version cemented Franklin’s place as one of the finest singers of our time, with an anthem which acted as a timely call to action for women all over the world.

A hit in several countries, Respect became Franklin’s signature song and began her reign as the undisputed Queen of Soul.

The song won her two Grammy awards in 1968 and in the 2004 American Rolling Stone Magazine positioned Respect at Number 5 on their list of the Greatest 500 Songs of All Time. Interestingly, it is the highest ranking for a female artist.
