1,000 Dr's: Dr. Oz Should Be Fired From Columbia University

Quote:
At least 1,000 U.S. doctors say they think Dr. Mehmet Oz should resign from his faculty position at Columbia University in New York, a new poll finds.
Earlier this week, 10 doctors sent a letter calling for Oz, host of the popular TV show "The Dr. Oz Show," to be removed from his academic position as a cardiothoracic surgeon at Columbia. The doctors said that Oz has promoted products and made claims that aren't supported by medical evidence.
And now, of the 1,300 doctors who responded by 4 p.m. ET today (April 24) to a poll conducted by SERMO, a social network for doctors, 735 doctors (57 percent) said Oz should resign from his faculty position at Columbia. Fifty doctors (4 percent) said Oz should have his medical license revoked. And another 280 doctors (22 percent) said Oz should both resign from his position and have his license taken away. An additional 18 percent said Oz should do nothing, because they respect him as a physician.
SERMO has more than 300,000 U.S. members, according to its website. The poll is still live, so no margin of error has been calculated yet.

Embattled celebrity physician Dr. Mehmet Oz is battling back against a group of 10 doctors who called for his expulsion from Columbia University's med school, saying in a video released Tuesday that they seek to infringe on his First Amendment rights.
"I know I've irritated some potential allies in our quest to make America healthy," Oz said in an advance clip from Thursday's episode of his show, obtained by CNN. "No matter our disagreements, freedom of speech is the most fundamental right we have as Americans, and these 10 doctors are trying to silence that right." [...]
The group of doctors from Stanford University, the American Council on Science and Health, UNC and elsewhere co-signed a letter to Columbia last week calling for Oz's dismissal from the med school, where he currently serves as vice chairman of the surgery department. Letter writer Dr. Henry Miller of Stanford accused Oz of "promoting quack treatments and cures in the interest of personal financial gain."
"I think I know the motivation at Columbia," Miller wrote. "They're star-struck, and like having on their faculty the best-known doctor in the country. But the fact is that his advice endangers patients, and this doesn't seem to faze them."

Dr. Oz has a history of promoting ridiculous "cures", and it's a shame that Columbia continues to keep him on their faculty. The 10 doctors never tried to silence him, they simply said that he shouldn't hold a position at Columbia while he's shown time and time again to be untrustworthy with his medical advice.
Universities (especially Ivy League institutions) are viewed as the pinnacle of knowledge, having him in such an important role is a dis-service to that title.

What has he done? From all I've seen of Dr. Oz he usually gives pretty good, basic health advice. His eating suggestions >>>>>
I think they're just pressed that they're not famous. Doctors are just glorified prescription writers. Nurses >>>>>

But Dr. Phil is not an MD? I think that's what they meant. Otherwise we could argue the Kanye, who has an honorary doctoral certificate is even more famous.

I don't follow him enough to know if he's any good or not, but the fact that he's a TV personality is enough to taint him as an academic in my eyes tbh. He makes his living off of advertiser $$$ and hawking X, Y, and Z health products.

He promotes a lot of debunked homeopathic treatments, miracle diet pills, and things that are not supported by scientific research.
