I think R8 is pretty similar to Madonna's Bedtime Stories era in terms of diversity so far. Look at their singles for example. Secret, Human Nature, Bedtime Story and Take A Bow sound nothnig alike, just as FFS, BBHMM and AO. All of them have a unique sound yet they were part of a very cohesive and strong album.

I see R8 as a step Rihanna has to take to reach a new level in her music and artistry, just like Madonna had to go through and experiment with Erotica and Bedtime Stories to reach the maturity to make Ray Of Light, and R9 can be Rihanna's Ray of Light too.
