In a recent interview with UK GQ magazine, American diva Christina Aguilera talked about contemporary music and how British singing sensation Cheryl Cole is the "voice of a generation".
GQ: Do you think that contemporary artists are as pioneering as the greats of the past?
CA: Well, every era has it's great. I always say how much I adore Etta James. That's no secret. Todays artists are competing a lot more, there's more of the same, less of the new. However, one singer I love today is Cheryl Cole. Oh my god, that girl can sing!
GQ: Oh, so you are a fan of Cheryl Cole? That's intriguing - what is it about her you admire?
CA: Well, you know, she just has this incredible voice. That girl can blow! Holla! What is there not to love about her 5 octave voice. She is unreal, the voice of a generation. I was watching a performance of hers on a show called 'Popstars the Rivals'; I believe it is called that, and when this girl started singing, my mouth dropped to the floor. She sang 'right here waiting' which is a song I love and she owned it. And her new song 'Fight for this Love' is off the hook. She is the greatest female vocalist alive today.
GQ: Well, Christina, I'm sure others would give that title to you...
CA: Yeah, I'm great; I know I am but Cheryl is the best. No-one has her pipes in this business. Also, her songwriting is amazing. I love how she tells a story from a female perspective - a true feminist. " I don't need no good advice" by girls aloud is one of the greatest feminist anthems of all times. Even better than Chaka's 'I'm every woman. She is someone I hugely respect.
