Labels are labels. You're free to label yourself but everyone else is going to do it for you so why would you label yourself?

I think that people are people and if a black person doesn't want to be known by the identifier of "black person" they should be able to state how they feel.

But "black" has more to do with your color than your actual ethnic background though. You can be "black" and still hail from some place that's not Africa. Like, there's even black Swedes for example. Of course there are other words to use for mixed black people, but they're just not commonly used.

The thing with racism is that racists don't care if you're from France, or from Sweden or from the UK, or Germany or where ever. If your skin color is not white and you can't "pass" as white (like east Asian), then you are fair game for the racists of the world. Calling yourself something different is not going to stop other people from calling you that, and it won't stop racists from hating you.

Yeah I read this mess a few days ago. He also said you have to adapt to racists, so he sold his $90,000 car because he kept getting pulled over for DWB(driving while black) and now has a cheaper $30,000 car and stopped getting pulled over. So basically become a less threatening, less rich, and less successful black person and white people will feel less threatened by you. Next he'll tell little black boys to sell their hoodies , snapbacks, stop going out at night, and stop wearing clothes with pockets so white people can stop shooting them dead. Otherwise its your fault for not adapting.

He sounds delusional. He will be black no matter what he chooses to label himself or not label himself. Race is about perception and he will not be perceived as anything, but black.

Plenty of white Americans identify with their lands of ancestral origin, even the ones several generations removed from whatever country their ancestors came from. Italian-Americans, Irish-Americans, white Mexican Americans, etc. Even Gaga will tell you that she's an Italian-American.

Some of these black actors kill me with this flawed logic of theirs. As many times as they've been passed over for roles, they, of all people, should know what time it is. You don't hear Halle and Denzel and Sam Jackson saying this ish. This "new black" nonsense has never even come out of the Smith kids mouths, and that is saying something.

Isaiah doesn't seem to get that he doesn't have to be called "black" to be treated as an "other."

I don't wanna get into it, it's too late for this, but you know that happens nowhere near as much as black Americans are referred to as African-American. It's not just America it happens, here some people call black people just African, which is even worse considering they were most likely born and raised here.

I agree with the second part though.

I don't know much about race politics in the UK, but African American is a term that came from the black community itself. And it was pretty radical at the time, because it was probably the first time black Americans had a say in how they wanted to be collectively identified. It's not like white people up and decided to call us that to be divisive.

I don't want to talk about Raven anymore, I've written too much about her as it is.

I just wanted to say what I said about many white Americans identifying as hyphenated Americans and add my two pence about how US blacks came to be called African-American. It wasn't some evil plot hatched by the white man.
