Over 100 People Were Killed by Police in March.
How Many More Will It Take?

Here's a statistic for you: It's been 31 days since the release of the White House Task Force on 21st Century Policing report, but the number of fatal police encounters is already over 100 and counting. That's an average of more than three people killed each day in March by police in America.

Too many of this month's victims fit a profile we know all too well -- unarmed men of color, some of whom have psychiatric disabilities. Victims like Charly Keunang in Los Angeles, California; Tony Robinson in Madison, Wisconsin; Anthony Hill in DeKalb County, Georgia; and Brandon Jones in Cleveland, Ohio; confirm that the problems with policing are national in scope.

This isn't a problem concentrated in a few rogue police departments. Even those police departments with the best of intentions need reform. Take, for example, last week'sDepartment of Justice report that Philadelphia police shot 400 people -- over 80 percent African-American -- in seven years. This is in a city where the police commissioner is an author of the very same White House task force report calling for police reform.

So clearly we must do more than read -- or even write -- these reports. Report recommendations, several of which are adopted from ACLU recommendations, must be implemented. The task force report makes 63 recommendations, but let's focus on just two. Neither one is novel, but both are critical to real police reform.

This report doesn't seem to address the most important aspect: were they armed/violent/dangerous or innocent?

It's easy to call cops disgusting, racist, etc. but if they weren't innocently killed then that makes a big difference. Cops have every right to shoot someone down if the suspect is fighting back especially with a gun.

How do they do that?

250k police officers in Germany (80 million population) can't even use 90 bullets in 1 year. Let alone aimed shots at people before we even talk about people being hit, injured or killed.

There are no specifics, but I would assume that most of them fit this description.

Unarmed doesn't necessarily being non-violent though. It isn't wrong for a cop to assume someone might be seconds from pulling out a gun or something else if they're already being violent. It all depends on the context of each case. If we're talking Michael Brown type cases, then this is indeed a mess and very sad. A change needs to be made somewhere regardless because these numbers are just very bad. I don't know why cops can't use tasers instead (unless the suspect is shooting and from a distance)

The fact is, black men, whether violet, unarmed, or whatever, are much more likely to be shot and killed by the police. It's sad and disgusting.

Yes, but that is what tasers and other forms of non-lethal restraining devices should be used for... An unarmed man should never be killed by police regardless of the circumstances.
