In Season 5, Melissa McGhee placed 12th after a shaky performance of, "Lately". Since that time, she has continued to make an impact in the Florida music scene and is pushing her music career forward again.

In an interview, she openly admitted to being a lesbian. She states in the interview, "I didn't come out until after Idol. It was not an accepted thing."
