Major labels pressure Spotify to restrict free users
Quote:
Major record labels are allegedly pressuring music streaming services like Spotify to drop their 'freemium' model.
Currently users can sign up for a free, ad-funded account to stream music via Spotify, however, the likes of Universal want this to change. As the Financial Times report, the label are using their licence negotiations with the platform to persuade the company to charge users.
Labels claim that free usage of streaming services are harming music sales, both digitally and physically. Universal Music CEO Lucian Grainge has criticised 'freemium' platforms in the past, saying: "Ad-funded on-demand is not going to sustain the entire ecosystem of the creators as well as the investors."
That's stupid. Youtube is free, Soundcloud is free, Vimeo is free, I can just go on and name 100 sites that are totally free and you can stream (or download) good to high quality stuff from. If Spotify starts charging, its popularity will decline.
They still think that we use Spotify because it's "awesome"? No bitch, most of us use it because it's free. The second you start charging for it we will drop it and go back to other free services (or downloads ).
I am so tired of money hungry celebs and labels discussing spotify. You have plenty of money, relax. The only thing spotify should change is making it impossible to skip the ads between songs
It has 30+ million users and 1/3 of it is paid subscribers. So if y'all dumped the service 2/3 would be gone but none of that portion is paying for it so the loss wouldn't be a major one. Bye I guess.
This. People always fall back on the "OMG the labels/musicians already have enough money. Let it be FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE" not realizing that the music industry is a business. Wanna know why your fave isn't having a lot of money put into a PR campaign? Because there isn't enough money to support it.
Like JFC...it's $10 a month for UNLIMITED streaming. Stop being a cheap ass and pay up.
Why would I pay $10 when its free right now or I could use another streaming site to get it for free. Thats a waste of money. I'll save my $120 a year thank you.
