This has nothing to do with it being the English language, nor does it affect just Korean and Japanese students. Most of the things the people interviewed were talking about are common problems with language learning as a whole nowadays. Most students are forced to learn some sort of second language in schools but aren't invested in it so they do the bare minimum to get a good grade then ditch it.

Most can understand english but they have trouble speaking it which is the main problem.

I can agree with this video. I have teachers who taught English as a second language specifically in Japan, Korea, and Thailand and they said that the curriculum many teachers were using was flawed. It was like all they were given was quizzes on random english words and were told to fix grammar mistakes in pre written sentences. I wouldve not been able to learn Korean if I was taught the way a lot of teachers teach English.

Several of my Korean friends dont like to speak english and just prefer to speak Korean because they arent very confident. And even when they do speak english they tend to sit and think for a minute before responding or respond in short sentences and words. I can definitely understand because when I learn french in high school, I was just quizzed on words and there was very little grammar taught to me so I would be horribly uncomfortable speaking french now due to not learning the language in an effective way.

What a lot of English speakers, and most people who live in the Western world, don't realize is just how hard learning English is. A lot of sounds that are present in the English language don't exist in Asian languages such as Korean and Japanese, meaning that in order to learn and become fluent in English, Korean and Japanese people have to learn to move their mouths and tongues in ways they never have before. This leads to insecurities that cause Korean and Japanese people to refrain from speaking English because they feel they're not "good enough".

Also, you don't really need to be all that qualified to teach English in places like Korea and Japan, so really the students aren't getting the best education. If you go on YouTube, there are hundreds of young people who move to Japan and Korea just to teach English and it's clear they have no place to be teaching when they don't even speak the language of the native land they're in. How are you supposed to teach a Korean or Japanese English when you can't communicate with them in their own language?

The Korean education system is the pits in some ways, especially when it comes to English education. Memorizing vocabulary and grammar rules don't allow you actually communicate in English.

I do think English is a difficult language to learn too (as a second language at least). I studied French and Spanish at school, and those languages are so much more logical than English imo. And the rules in those languages are actual rules with rare exceptions, exceptions to rules in English are a lot more common, so from that aspect it's more difficult to learn too.

That's sad. Considering most of asia..Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore know English like their first language.
