In this latest installment of DOOTL (Days of Our Trap Lives), young Shmurda continues to find himself jammed up by Johnny Law.
Trap Date 12/17/14 PHB (Post Hot Boy): Bobby Shmurda was initially arrested. According the NYT, bail was set at 2M.
Bobby spent about 6 weeks at Rikers before posting bond without Epic’s help.
Trap Date 1/29/15 PHB: Young Shmurda is arraigned again on another 32 counts of illegal fuqery .
Bail is set again at 2M. Bobby is removed from Riker’s to protective custody in a downtown Manhattan detention center, where he’s still incarcerated to this day. Meanwhile, Epic Records continues to look the other way .
“You know what I’d really like to see? That check from Epic,” said ’50. “Why they didn’t get Bobby out? Why they didn’t bail Bobby out? They got money on the man why they didn’t bail him out?”
Hmm . . . What an ethical can of worms that opens. I can’t see Epic choosing to distance themselves for ethical reasons. Now you know Epic did their homework on Bobby before they signed him. So, it’s not like they didn’t have any idea of what they were getting. Technically, Bobby hasn’t even been convicted of anything yet. So, it’s not like Epic would be condoning crime outright. Plus labels have been bailing out these jailbird cats for the longest . . .
Quote:
“Older hip-hop stars remember when labels were full service: 50 Cent recalled getting rappers on his Interscope imprint, G Unit, out of jail in a matter of hours; Suge Knight of Death Row Records infamously paid Tupac Shakur’s bail in exchange for a recording contract.”
I know times are tough in the music industry these days, but Bobby is one of the few artists currently making money for Epic, so you would think . . .
This latest article on Bobby is really provocative because it puts him in a human light and portrays him as a product of his environment. The author takes the stance that Bobby is a starry eyed victim, exploited by the same industry he hopes to use as an escape from the streets.
Quote:
“Mr. Pollard announced his arrival with a performance in an Epic conference room. A cellphone video shows a mostly white crowd of employees looking on stiffly as Mr. Pollard, ever limber, mimes shooting with his fingers and jumps on the table, an awkward five minutes that now feel foreboding.”
Quote:
Now, from jail, Mr. Pollard [Bobby], who once stood by the veracity of his rhymes, said that the lyrics were “fabricated,” because “that’s what’s selling nowadays.” And, he added, Epic “grabbed me up at a vulnerable time.” He continued: “I was desperate to get out of the ’hood. I knew I was going to lose my life or go to jail.”
Shortly after being signed by Epic, Bobby said,
Quote:
“I don’t want to sell drugs; I’m tired of getting in trouble,” he said in a radio interview the week he was signed.
The irony of that is that when he was arrested back in December, he allegedly had crack, weed, 40-50 stacks, and an assault rifle on him . So, it’s hard to know what to think. Shmurda’s been charged for crimes occurring before “Hot Boy” but if you’ve finally gotten your big opportunity and a lucrative deal, why would you jeopardize that with additional criminal acts ? Oy, I don’t know. Do any of you ?
This is an interesting case. It is odd that Epic has not bailed him out when Hot Boy was one of the biggest urban tracks last year. You'd think since he's one of the few artists that's making them money, they'd want to get him out and have him recording new material and promoting. Plus, it's not like it's uncommon for a label to bail an artist out of jail, like the examples you stated in the OP. This makes it seem like he's a victim of the industry, they used him to make a quick buck, then left him in the dust. Plus, it's Epic... they have a reputation of screwing artists over....
However, if allegations turn out true and he had drugs and an assault rifle on him, maybe it's on him. He stated he didn't wanna be about that life anymore, but if he knowingly keeps getting involved in that ****, Epic may start to believe he's bull******** and not want to deal with him anymore, which I guess I could understand their actions in that.
Still I believe it's more of the first scenario tho tbh

I think at the end of the day, it may be about money. It's what, 200K to post bond on 2M bail? That's not chump change, and he's been arraigned again, a little after a month since the first time. That's another 2M bail. It may be something like over 100 counts of this, that, and other. Who knows what else is coming? And then you think about how much the legal fees are going to be when the trial actually begins. It's just not looking good for him.

Hmm, this is a really good point too. Although Epic has had a nice year last year with their artists last year, they still just might not have the resources to get him out as they were on the verge of bankruptcy not too long ago (that may be alleged though. Not sure...). It's sad for Bobby tho, this situation will pretty much be career suicide for him. Hot Boy ain't gonna be enough to keep the GP looking out for him in a year+'s time when all of this blows over. Then who's gonna be paying all those legal fees? What's gonna happen if he goes to jail? It just seems like a mess for Bobby at this point
why would epic bail him out... he clearly has done a lot of bad stuff and deserves to be in jail. its his fault by squandering his opportunities and talents on being a thug.
