Islam started as a tribal religion, it unified the people and sects of Arabia. Then it went violent, by attacking its neighbours Byzantine and Persian empires. This happened in the span of 50 years.

After that though, Islam became a religion of peace and tolerance from around 700 AD to 1250 AD. Commonly, christians and jews were allowed to leave in peace by paying a jyzia tax while in Europe crusades against heretics and ethnic cleansing was ravaging the continent. Islam was a beacon of science and reason while Europe was dark and barbaric.

After the sack of Baghdad of 1258, Islam started to regress. Even though, tolerance and acceptance were still common under the Ottoman Empire, who became one of the greatest powers of its time for about 2 centuries.

By 1920, after the end of WW1, the middle east was still inhabited by many christians and jews with no problems.

After WW1, Islam has started to regress towards something that it never was, and today islamic countries are commonly the least liberal and open in the word.

I think it's because of greed and conquests like Christianity. They rationalized and justified their invasions of other lands in ancient times because it spreading faith, but it was really to expand empires and take money and resources. Other faith systems like Buddhism, Hinduism and even Judaism can't do this stuff because there are no conversions. There is little way to justify/rationalize intolerance.

In modern times, the same lack of tolerance exists. They live in their own bubble where everyone else is wrong and threatening. I think Christians have changed because they abandoned their religion for capitalism.

But Christianity started to change way before today, it started with martin Luther in 1508 and the rise of Protestantism. Protestantism brought puritanism in social issues but liberalism in science, and since then christianity has never looked back.

Islam never had a reform like that, and today's main Islam sect Wahabbism is new and way more conservative than what it was before. Women did not wear hijabs or burqas in the golden age and were way more free than women in Europe who were basically slaves

It's just a rejection of many progressive values being spread throughout the world, and it only affects SOME Islamic countries (it also affects countries who are mainly christian/other religions as well).
Also, America funded tons of Islamic terrorists near the end of the Cold War so that's part of the reason why islamic terrorists groups are prominent today (though honestly the media makes it seem like they cause all the terrorism in the world, sometimes).

mmmh not really, and they all paid taxes, muslims paid other taxes as well. Why do you think 10% of egyptians are christians today while there are no muslims left in Spain? Christians exterminated or exhiled all muslims while muslims accepted jews and christians. Jews expelled from Spain fled to the Ottoman Empire who was the most tolerant country of its time.

That might be so for Islam and Judaism as well but the violent verses in the BIble, Quran and Torah paint a different story.
