typically mixtapes are free (not always, lots of rappers end up uploading their mixtapes to iTunes after a while) and are not of the same quality as studio albums, be it from production or finalized mixing.. whatever, they just don't usually sound as polished

in this instance, these are all leftover songs that Drake has from his actual 4th album 'Views from the 6' that likely would have never seen the light of day, so he released them in this format to a) get out of his contract with Cash Money b) tide his fans over until the actual LP release

What's the difference between an album and a mixtape for sale? Such a gimmick to exaggerate or overweigh success.

I'd consider it more along the lines of a collection of b-sides, not quite a studio album but not quite a mixtape. It had the same place in a discography like a soundtrack or a side project to me.

..? mixtapes are not always free, they just aren't distributed through a label and are predominately sold via street vendors, word of mouth, etc which is why Nicki says **** like 'made a million of a mixtape'

the advent of the internet has essentially made everything free, so since mixtapes have historically not been of the same quality as studio albums they started to evolve into a mostly* free collection of songs uploaded to mixtape / music distribution sites



but just so we're clear: that doesn't make this any less of a mixtape / they are album outtakes for a reason, after all
