If you don't remember Justine Sacco, she was Ms. "Going to Africa. Hope I don’t get AIDS. Just kidding. I’m white!" on twitter last year.

The furor over Sacco’s tweet had become not just an ideological crusade against her perceived bigotry but also a form of idle entertainment. Her complete ignorance of her predicament for those 11 hours lent the episode both dramatic irony and a pleasing narrative arc. As Sacco’s flight traversed the length of Africa, a hashtag began to trend worldwide: #HasJustineLandedYet. “Seriously. I just want to go home to go to bed, but everyone at the bar is SO into #HasJustineLandedYet. Can’t look away. Can’t leave” and “Right, is there no one in Cape Town going to the airport to tweet her arrival? Come on, Twitter! I’d like pictures #HasJustineLandedYet.”

It was a profound reversal for Sacco. When I first met her, she was desperate to tell the tens of thousands of people who tore her apart how they had wronged her and to repair what remained of her public persona. But perhaps she had now come to understand that her shaming wasn’t really about her at all. Social media is so perfectly designed to manipulate our desire for approval, and that is what led to her undoing. Her tormentors were instantly congratulated as they took Sacco down, bit by bit, and so they continued to do so. Their motivation was much the same as Sacco’s own — a bid for the attention of strangers — as she milled about Heathrow, hoping to amuse people she couldn’t see.
So I think this was an interesting article on the public-shaming trend that's become rampant on twitter. On one hand, these people are idiots for putting these statements out there. On the other hand, I wouldn't doubt that most of the people participating in public shaming have said comments equally stupid, or worse. They just happen to have not had millions of people scrutinizing their personal lives over 1 comment. Do Sacco and Co. really deserve all of this? I feel like it's just a sick thrill for a lot of people, we all make mistakes.
The modern version of the Salem Witch Trials on a global scale tbh
IDK. I'm not saying she mistakenly said those words and meant something else. I'm saying that she posted something she shouldn't have and that's the mistake. Which like, every has done. The attacking is just too much for me
Reminds me of people on ATRL, who overreact on things that artists who they don't like say (like Demi Lovato), when they've done MUCH worse So hypocritical. They just do whatever seems cool to fit in
It's 2015, get with the times, you can't post ANYTHING on the internet if you don't want it to be seen cause it'll be there forever. And ik she truly thought that tweet was 'okay' she deserves every bit of hatred she got, just for being so dumb
It's horrible, I've read a lot of these cases, they spend the worst days of their lives by just a few words. People say stuff like this all the time, but they don't go viral.
