Sonic Lost World did really well (a lot better than deserved), as have all of the crossover games. The problem is that Sonic games have been terribly reviewed now for at least a decade now so it's not like the consumer is going to rush out to get them.

The 3DS is the biggest platform, but Sonic has never done well on handheld. Ever. Unless it was a simple 2D Arcade game.
Not to mention, Nintendo making Sega turn the franchise into a Platformer, rather than a classic Sonic game is just the word idea ever
Sega were better when they use classic gameplay. Although 2006, and Unleashed were a misstep, the found their footing again.
