This week, Dolores O'Riordan released her second solo album, 'No Baggage,' and promptly announced that her September solo tour was canceled. An unusual move perhaps, except that the news was accompanied by the announcement of a Cranberries tour, which will begin in North America at the end of the year and continue with European dates in early 2010.
When O'Riordan spoke with Spinner earlier in the summer about her upcoming solo album and tour, there was no hint that any of this was on the cards. That was, she says, because the idea just came up recently and the decision to reform was only made in the last two or three weeks.
"I'm a very spontaneous person," she tells Spinner. "I don't really think about long-term. I don't really think about business that much. I don't plan my life that much. I just go day-by-day-by-day, which is kinda cool, right? Because then you don't really worry about what's going to happen in three or four weeks. You just play it by ear. It was a very gradual thing," she adds of the reunion. "I thought I'm not getting any younger. Why wait?"
The Cranberries, which also includes brothers Noel and Mike Hogan and Fergal Lawler, went on hiatus in 2003 without truly breaking up. The upcoming shows will mix the band's songs with O'Riordan's solo cuts, including several from 'No Baggage,' which was released by Rounder Records Aug. 25.
"I thought it would be very cool to play the old stuff and combine that with the solo songs and see what it becomes," O'Riordan says. "There should not be any structure or formula in art or music. We should, as artists, follow our hearts and do what we feel."
