A flurry of media vans greeted South Hills High School students Tuesday morning as they returned to school after two Covina Valley Unified School District teachers were arrested over the weekend on suspicion of having sexual relationships with students.
On Saturday, deputies arrested South Hills English teacher Melody Suzanne Lippert, 38, of Covina, and Michelle Louise Ghirelli, 30, who was working on special assignment at the district office. The two are accused of engaging in sexual conduct with male students during two separate trips to San Clemente State Beach late last year, according to Orange County sheriff’s and CVUSD officials.
“I was surprised,” said David Bazaldua, 14, a freshman, outside the school. “We saw them on the news. Some of my friends were a little shocked too.”
While some students and parents said they were concerned about the allegations, others said the problem is not new.
“It’s existed since I was a teenager,” said South Hills parent Edward Bustillos, of Covina. “I don’t know if there’s a solution.”
Officials booked Lippert on suspicion of conspiracy and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Ghirelli was booked on suspicion of oral copulation and unlawful sex with a minor.
