WICKED film hoping for 2016 release.
Quote:
(CNN)Before the world was obsessed with the magic of "Frozen," there was "Wicked." And now that musical may be coming to the big screen next year.
Producer Marc Platt of "Into the Woods" -- itself a movie based on a hit Broadway play -- told Film Divider that a "Wicked" film could come in 2016, "but it's not set in stone."
"The process of developing that movie has begun. We're working on it, and whether it makes 2016 or not, I'm not so sure," Platt said. The hit Broadway show, based on the 1995 novel "Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West" by Gregory Maguire, is a prequel to "The Wizard of Oz."
In 2004, the musical earned future "Frozen" star Idina Menzel a Tony for best leading actress in a musical for her portrayal of the witch Elphaba. Costar Kristin Chenoweth was also nominated for her work as the good witch, Glinda.
Platt said the creators of the musical want to take their time with the film, as they have set the bar very high for a big-screen adaption. Stephen Schwartz wrote the music and lyrics for the play, with dialogue by Winnie Holzman, who Platt said is currently writing the movie script.
"Audiences enjoy that show so much that we are intending to move forward on the movie but aren't going to do so until we're satisfied in the material we have as a screenplay, and that the film will be every bit as satisfying as what we have on the stage."
So before you get ready to defy gravity, know that Platt is advising fans to patience.
"It took 27 years to make 'Into the Woods' into a film from its original stage production, and 30 years with 'Les Mis,' " he said. "Some things take time for a reason."

Wicked might finally be on its way to defying gravity on the big screen. Stephen Daldry, the director of Billy Elliot on film and stage, is attached to the project, producer Marc Platt recently revealed in an interview with Film Divider. Platt, who produced the show on Broadway, said the team is aiming for a 2016 release date.
“He’s been on for a year or two,” Platt said of Daldry. “But it’s in process. 2016 is the goal, but I don’t know whether we’ll make that goal or not. We will make the movie, but like I said, the bar is really high.” Platt added: “It’s in the works, it’s not in a rush.”
Platt also told Film Divider that Winnie Holzman, who wrote the book for the Broadway show, is working on the screenplay. Holzman is probably best known as the creator of My So-Called Life. Platt, meanwhile, is also a producer on Disney’s Into the Woods film.

Obviously nothing set in stone and they've been alluding to 2016 for a while, but I think Universal will have kicked the process up a notch post-Frozen. Strong lead female characters, magic, misunderstood villain, phenomenally successful stage show, recognised Oz world etc. it screams hit and it's now on trend.
Interesting that Harvey Weinstein has said this:
Quote:
The producer revealed that he has already offered Styles a role in one of his films, but the One Direction star had to turn the part down.
"We offered him a part and he couldn't do the movie because he had the tour. The amount of money their tour did is crazy, so he's got obligations."
|
Which could relate to this:
Quote:
One Direction frontman Harry Styles and Glee star Lea Michele have both been linked to the project in the past week, with Billy Elliot's Stephen Daldry rumoured to direct.
Styles, meanwhile, was in Hollywood to attend Harvey Weinstein's pre-Oscars party and has supposedly piqued the interests of casting directors. "Moviemakers see him as a new Zac Efron and think he would be a perfect casting for a movie musical," an unattributed source told the Sun. "He is top of the Wicked team's wishlist to play the romantic lead role of Fiyero."

The stage show is amazing and will translate well to film IMO. There have been rumours about a big screen adaption of Wicked for so long now tho.

Harry would obviously be Fiyero/Scarecrow. I could see him werking, tbh. The pop girls/actresses will be fighting to play Elphaba tbh.

Not too keen on the possibility of Harry Styles being in this but excited nonetheless

The casting really depends on where they want to take it.
Harry is logical stunt casting, but he would need to be joined by a young (actually age appropriate) cast for it not to look odd...which may prove problematic as they'd probably need to stunt cast Elphaba and Glinda with tweenteen year old stars who can vocally pull it off. Plus, they'd need to pass for older for ACT 2.
It's more likely they'll go for twenty somethings who can look younger and older - that'll open up the casting pool more.
I wouldn't be surprised if Kristen Bell was cast as G(a)linda and Lea Michelle as Elphaba, but I feel the latter is boring casting. She can vocally do it, but has minimal starpower these days to excuse her hammy performances.
In terms of pop girls, I actually have been entertaining the idea of Gaga as Elphaba considering she's ubiquitous with outcasts, has singing and acting chops, and would look good in green. I don't know if she has the range, though.

If they're gonna do this, I need Idina and Kristin to come back and play Elphaba and Glinda.

Idina and Kristin will only be in the film if they star in other roles (e.g. Elphaba's mother and Madame Morrible), or they split the characters between two actresses for young and older Elphaba and Glinda.

I think they should animate it (queen willemijn verkaik could do the dutch and german dubs like she did with frozen) but that obviously won't happen. Original cast won't happen either (too old) and I'd love someone like megan hilty but that's defintely not happening, nor are eden, shoshana, kerry or willemijn as elphaba
I think the best way to do it is to cast relatively unknowns who could sing the score as elphaba and glinda and then stunt cast the **** out the supporting characters. I'm thinking Zac efron or a boybander for fiyero, meryl streep or bette midler for morrible and things like that
If they want celebrities for the leads, lea michelle, kristen bell, Anna kendrick, amanda seyfried and emmy Rossum would be obvious choices. I'm not sure if any pop girls could sing the score and be right for the role but ariana comes the closest

Kristin would make a hilarious morrible imo. I'm not sure if I even want idina and kristin as the leads tho. They tried that with rent and it did not work well. And think of any promo performances by idina after everything that's happened after frozen
