Britain is not Europe. This is held, not so much literally, but rather to point out that Britain is really part of the North American cultural world and economy; or that it is still fundamentally part of a sovereign Commonwealth that gives it a distinctive place in the world; or that it has a longer established and different form of liberal democratic government, that has always been free of continental authoritarianism. On this basis, Britain is frequently claimed to have more in common with the US on race and immigration, or to be a country of immigration more like Canada or Australia. Europeans, too, offer sustinence to this view when they speak (often disparagingly) of ‘anglo-saxon’ culture or economic policies. To conclude there is a more racial diversity there than in continental Europe.
