Most artists (usually independent artists) have a lot of issues with writing unions (they call them "pros") because they don't pay properly (royalties, residuals, etc) and they go to rival companies like ASCAP. So basically Christina has extended her partnership with BMI and will work with them for the duration of her next album, hence her already registering "Waves."
More importantly artists don't make these decisions until they embark on new music catalogs, meaning a new album is coming sooner than we think because these "pros" have to get all the samples, writing credits and copyright info solidified before the album is released. The fact that this was announced today means we will be getting song titles and album info soon.
