Don't book too far in advance but not too close to departure date either, browse the internet and try to fly early or late on the day and not in the afternoin, it's usually cheaper
Funny because I was searching this up for my sister today. Book tickets months way before your flight, compare tickets on comparison sites and maybe stop at another country first in between flights . It's also cheaper to go on holiday in the winter
If you're a frequent flyer, make sure to sign up for the mileage programs
American Airlines + Emirates have the best freq.flyer deals for both local + int flights (I think I'm due for a free return ticket to any destination via Dubai, actually )
Frequent flyer programs, LAYOVERS, budget airlines like Southwest, horrible seats (last/exit rows, middle seats), book several months in advance.
Sometimes, though, if you want a certain flight at a certain time, you're going to have to pay up. For example, when me and my family went to Tokyo in Nov. 2012, we paid around $2000 per ticket one way (those were nonstop though).
I'll use Tokyo as an example to show how booking flights with connections are much cheaper.
Boston to Tokyo nonstop - $2083
Boston to Detroit to Tokyo - $1405
You have to go on incognito mode, i got my ticket to LA for $300 down from $450
Oh interesting.
