"Iggy Azalea: Dumb or Evil?" - Jezebel
Jezebel are weighing in on the Iggy Azalea/black culture issue. They annoy me sometimes, but I actually found this really interesting:

Here is an excerpt:
Quote:

This is the first in a series called Sheroes & Zeroes, about the people who defined our year in culture in both terrific and terrible ways.
A few years ago, The Daily Show did a great segment about Fox News' coverage of the "Ground Zero Mosque," in which they debated whether or not the network was evil or stupid. Fox's coverage of the controversy had been so obviously absurd that, as The Daily Show pointed out, they'd have to be either hopelessly stupid or deliberately evil to push the narrative that they did. Neither explanation is preferable to the other, but either way, it's an explanation.
With Iggy Azalea, I find myself grappling with the same question. Is she a plumb asshole or is she dumb as hell? It could go either of both terrible ways. The list of sensible grievances against this woman is long, and there isn't much time left in 2014. We'll just hit the highlights.
I. Iggy Azalea is from Australia. When she gives interviews or generally moves about her life, she talks like an Australian, yet somehow when she raps, she sounds like an extra from ATL. Iggy lived in the South for five whole years, and she claims that that influence and the fact that she was taught to rap by Southern rappers is the reason for this particular vocal discrepancy.
She also has repeatedly referred to herself as "ghetto," because, I dunno, kangaroos.
You might be thinking: That doesn't make any ****ing sense, and you would be right. I myself lived in Boston for four years and somehow managed to walk away without sounding like a Wahlberg. However you may feel about him, Macklemore—a rapper often mentioned in the same breath as Iggy— has never done this. He's a white boy from the Pacific Northwest and he talks, raps and acts like one.
This is the correct way for a white person to enter a predominately black genre of music: to enter the genre as his or her (white) self. To do otherwise would be to actively utilize stereotypes of what you think a black person looks, sounds and acts like. To do so would be to wear blackness like some sort of costume for monetary gains.
I'll defer to Azealia Banks briefly:
@iggyazalea this is you:

(For the record, Azealia Banks says a lot of things that give me pause, but her criticism of Iggy has always been on point.)
So the question remains: Is Iggy Azalea really clueless to the point where she gets on stage or steps in the recording booth and has no idea that suddenly she's rapping with an Southern accent? Has she been taken over by the ghost of Pimp C?
Or, does she know that it's more profitable for her to put on an accent that implies blackness because history has shown that white people much prefer their black music to be performed by white artists? (See: Elvis all the way through Sam Smith.)
II. Iggy Azalea's music is bad.

I really hope Iggy takes the hint and just loses the voice. Who cares if she feels it's justified, it's in her best interest to just lose it.

Everyone knows that Iggy practically made the KKK and is a known slave driver.
No need for more threads about it.

Why can't people do this woman do her thing? who cares if she's good or bad,if she's fake or not. If you don't like her, don't listen to her.
I'm not even her stan but this thing has gone too far.

Because her entire shtick is racist. That's like saying "who cares about racism in the media?"

Like how many times to do people have to call you a minstrel for you to go, "Maybe I should just rap in my real voice".

What can't people stop treating her like she's this helpless victim who didn't bring this on herself? Karmas a bitch, and I'm sure she got her millions and TI and token boyfriend to comfort her.

Not to mention she STILL mind-blowingly refuses to take ownership and directly address the criticism.
It comes off as deliberately cold, disrespectful, stubborn and defiant. Which is a farce.
As if we don't already know she's super soft and overly emotional at the tiniest hint of criticism.

All of this is true. I will never get that "I'm a runaway slave master" line out of my head, and the people who defend her after that sicken me.

But that was years ago and she even apologized for it. I don't support it either, but I'm not going to hold a grudge on someone who sees the wrongdoing of their previous actions, unlike some people on Twitter.

She annoys me in so many ways. Every single one of her tweets is just one way of saying "I'm so great and I'm better than you" which is also a reflection of her entire discography. I'm rather baffled at her extreme self-absorbedness and shallowness, and her clinging onto her proven-to-be racist/distasteful accent for the only thing she gives a **** about - money and fame.
No one needs to prove how her accent is fake anymore because that has already been done many times; it's nothing more than an imitation of black people and an invalid excuse for her to gate crash and mock culture she does not belong in. She'll make up the most ******** excuses and reasons for her to use it, and ignore all the valid criticisms for her not to use it, so that she's seen as legitimate and will receive a huge pay cheque at end of the day.
How many of her songs does she incorporate her blaccent? All of them? And talk about how she's so hot, great, rich... and has to mention her ****ing name? Virtually all of them? Her material has no substance and is pretty much a desperate shot at clinging onto the most success she can, irregardless of how many people it un-rightfully upsets.

There are some things that an apology just doesn't make up for. Especially when she doesn't see the problem in her current actions either. I'm not saying she should quit rapping or making music, but she comes off as really bitter and ignorant at times. I just wish she would stop avoiding the issue.

I really don't get what the issue is with her accent when rapping? It's just how her rapping voice has been molded by the influences she has listened to. Country singers use a twang/country accent when they sing and a lot of the time, they don't have one when they talk...Taylor for example, in her earlier stuff.
I just am sick of people doing the most to Iggy. I'm not even a big fan of hers, but I wish people would give the girl a break and stop dissecting every piece of every single thing she says or does.
