Considering this is ATRL and recyclable pop music is considered avant garde, I don't think you're going to get a good opinion.
Nevertheless, while neither are too daring or radical, Beyonce for this poll

It's Britney.
The Britney album AND In The Zone were HUGE leaps forward for music. She continued that with Blackout.
Circus, Femme Fatale & Britney Jean weren't as avant-garde as the first 3 I said, but were anything but "generic".

The BEYONCÉ album is pretty avant garde. Tracks like "Haunted" and "Superpower" are pretty unique.
I would say Britney has "Toxic" and some tracks off "Blackout".

The one known for her classic hits and immaculate videography as well as her untouchable performances.
Legends like MJ and Madge wholeheartedly agree.

A lot of Britney's work is much more experimental/risky than Beyonce's. So, Britney.

None of the two, Toxic and Touch Of My Hand by Britney perhaps as for Bey and the ones saying haunted and ghost, all these songs have stellar production (Haunted) and great lyrics (Ghost)

Neither of them did anything that is even remotely reminiscent of avant-garde.

Neither are avant-garde, but Bey comes closest.
Ring the Alarm:
Quote:
Dave de Sylvi of Sputnikmusic noted that "Ring the Alarm" was a brave choice for a single, called it "angry and lyrically incendiary", and noted that Swizz Beatz's beats are "unusually intricate". Norman Meyers of Prefix Magazine noted that the song is evidence of Knowles' willingness to take chances. Rach Read of TeenToday wrote that it is a definite highlight and that "it's great to see an artist at the top of her game prepared to take risks with a track as unhinged as this."
|
Quote:
Andy Kellman of Allmusic called it "an angered, atonal, and out-of-character song"
|
Quote:
Jody Rosen from The New Yorker credited the jarring timbral and tonal variations on the song for giving a new musical sound that didn't exist in the world before Knowles. He further wrote, "If they sound 'normal' now, it's because Beyoncé, and her many followers, have retrained our ears."
|
Countdown:
Quote:
Alexis Petridis of The Guardian stated that "there's nothing like ['Countdown'] on the charts" and that the brass arrangement "stab the one moment you hear anything resembling the influences mooted in the advance publicity"
|
Ghost/Haunted
Quote:
In a review for The Quietus, Mof Gimmers described "Haunted" as a "perfect slice of vanguard-pop".
|
Quote:
Bosman further stated that "Haunted" along with "Partition" and "Mine", "are confident enough to take one, two, three left turns while maintaining thematic cohesion."
|
Quote:
Ryan E.C. Hamm from Under the Radar magazine felt that "It's remarkable to hear a pop star at the height of her arena-tour powers taking chances like 'Haunted,' a dirge of a song that behaves more as spoken word until it's 'Vogue'-y breakdown"
|
No Angel
Quote:
Ryan B. Patrick of Exclaim! noted that songs on the album, such as "No Angel", effectively display genre diversity, Beyoncé's vocal range and "a penchant of musical experimentation"
|
Quote:
Idolator's Mike Wass described "No Angel" as a "sonic adventure" which "experiments wildly" with synths and beats. He noted, "This pretty gem needs a few listens to be properly consumed but its ultimately one of the album's most fulfilling moments."
|
Mine
Quote:
"Mine" was met with rave reviews by critics as one of the highlights on the entire album, described as "excellent" and "utterly thrilling" despite "largely chorus-free", being mostly praised for how it reflected Beyoncé's determination to keep pushing creatively

What are you talking about?
Britney is more daring than Bey, her entire Blackout era was more daring than anything Bey did.
