How ARTPOP should have went
The biggest reason for Gaga's decline is the way the era was managed. Here is how I would have planned it.
First single - Do What U Want (feat R. Kelly), released in early july and NOT at the same time as another major pop girls opening single (although it was Katy's team that started the competition). With a music video simillar to the EMA performance's theme - Marilyn Munroe and the president, maybe with elements of media perception. The video would be released a week after the song drops. Atleast a top 3 position on Bilboard with longetivity on radio helping to stabalize sales as well as a VMA performance.
In her interivews and promotional images, she presents herself in the best, relatable and inoffensive way she can, while keeping a slight edge instead of focusing just on being artistic and alienating a lot of her mainstream audience. She lost a lot of fans after Born This Way, so this was her chance to win a lot of them back instead of adding fuel to the fire.
Second single - Venus, released in early september. Although it's quite risky, it would have been a big moment in her career if handled correctly. The Music Video's theme would have been the clashing of science and nature - she is an angel who fell from another planet (venus) into the sea on earth. She becomes 'Seashell girl' (which would have been ARTPOP's iconic image) and discovers that the only way she can get back to her planet and return to her Goddess is by becoming 'rocket woman'. With several promotional performances and a radio deal, it would have been atleast top 5 on billboard.
Third single - Gypsy, released around the time of the album release. She has reinvented her image and persona, showing a more vulnerable side to her and she now has light brown, wavy hair simillar to the first promotional image with the mask. The music video, released within 3 weeks after it's release, is light hearted - she is an adventurous hippie travelling through different cultures in her boots, flowery cape and frayed hat. While trying to find a home to settle in, she realises she doesn't need one so embraces her freedom instead. With an EMA performance and a radio deal, it would be atleast another top 3 position on billboard.
Fourth single - Sex Dreams, released in mid january. The song has remained with it's original production, like the itunes festival version - no backing vocals in the chorus to distract from the perfect production, and no changed bridge. (Aura and Manicure also remain unchanged as album tracks). In the music video, she is the sexiest she can be. She is in love with a man who she knows she can't be with - he is either gay or with someone else, so has to imagine being with him. We see the transition of whats going on in her mind, to reality which is the complete opposite. This would have been a top 10 hit with enough promotion.
Fifth single - Applause, released at the end of march when the ARTRAVE begins. Instead of the video's theme being clowns and art, it would explore tour footage of the difficulties she faces behind the scenes and backstage and how being on stage and performing makes her sadness go away. A low top 10 hit.
Sixth and final single - Aura, released in June. It was clear from the start that she wanted to get this out there. Having a string of top 10 hits already, this would have been her personal moment of artistic freedom and to play about with her visions. Too complex for radio and general listeners, it would have been an iconic flop- between number 30 and 40.
I believe if the era was handled this way, her career would be in a much better place just now. What do you think?
