Anything above 6 feet that isn't a dive hurts; this was a bridge.
The water can't move out of the way in time for your body to sink, so it acts like a solid. Imagine those corn starch mixtures you played with in middle school; if you let the, they will ooze through your fingers, but if you move too quickly, it returns to a "solid."
Alternatively, recall a time you belly flopped off a diving board, and your whole front side turned red and felt like pins and needles. That multiplied by the height of a bridge instead.
