They're both great albums and not that much alike at all imo.
Rated R sticks with me because it has dark subject matter, and it was something I related to very deeply at a dark time in my life.
1989 is a very fun pop record. I haven't spent nearly as much time with 1989 as I want yet tho my full opinion hasn't been molded yet.
