Because punk cockroaches the Offspring are headlining Pointfest, it might be tempting to think that the all-day festival is nodding back to the ‘90s – an era when cred-laden bands such as the Stone Roses, Pulp and Echo & the Bunnymen played the event. But like the Pointfests from back in the day, this year’s version is celebrating the favorites of the radio station’s modern, youthful listeners. Along with ‘fest veterans such as Ludo, Sick Puppies and the Used, highlights include punkish power-poppers Taking Back Sunday, mad-scientist synthpunks Shiny Toy Guns, throwback rockers the Parlor Mob and local hard rockers Cavo, who recently signed to Reprise Records and have found some radio success with the song “Champagne.”

Local boys will make good when Alton-based rock band All Fall Down performs Saturday at Pointfest 24.

"This is a great opportunity for us," drummer Drew Podhorn said.

Pointfest, an outdoor music festival spotlighting the latest in alternative music, is held twice a year at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Maryland Heights, Mo. This year's headliners include The Offspring, Chevelle, Blue October, Taking Back Sunday and The Used. The event is sponsored by KPNT-FM 105.7 The Point in St. Louis.

All Fall Down will be performing on the local stage alongside other established St. Louis area groups, including Stone Dog Diaries and New Translation.

The band, comprised of Alton area members of the local hard rock scene, formed in 2007.

"Tony (Mikoff), Drew (Podhorn) and I put the band together," lead vocalist Brandon Holland said. "We all go way back. Joe and I played in a band together in sixth grade. I played drums in that group. Then, in ninth grade, Tony and I played in a band together."

Dan Dunning played guitar in a group whose previous members included Holland and Podhorn. When that group came to an end, he joined his former bandmates, and the All Fall Down lineup was finalized.

"It was a positive move for us," Dunning said.

Influences for the band members are an eclectic mix, including "classic" artists such as Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Metallica, as well as newer acts like Godsmack and Soulfly.

For lead singer Holland, being in the group reinforces the special connection to music he has had from an early age.

"I remember my dad playing music when I was young," he said. "He played guitar and sang. He passed away when I was five, and playing music keeps me in touch with him."

For its members, the origin of the band's name goes much deeper than simply a line from the famous nursery rhyme. Persevering through personal tragedies, the band sees itself rising from the ashes of adversity and the remnants of previous bands to forge a new beginning and a strong support group.

"I thought it sounded cool," said guitarist Tony Mikoff, who originally came up with the name. "It comes from the nursery rhyme, but it also reflects how we are there for each other and pick each other up."

"This is a brotherhood of five people that can rely on each other," bassist Joe McDonald added.

Holland's house was demolished in a tornado three years ago, and a photo of the aftermath is incorporated into the band's logo to further reflect how far the group has come as a result of the camaraderie.

Earlier this year, the band recorded a four-song EP at Trailer Studios in Foristell, Mo. The recording studio is owned and operated by Scott Gertkin and Rich Criebaum, members of the internationally known St. Louis hard rock band Modern Day Zero.

"We met them at a show," Holland said. "I talked to Scotty, and he told me about their studio."

Songs completed during the sessions include "God and War," "Free," "Heavy" and "Pretend." The CD will be available free of charge at Pointfest.

"Those guys are great," Holland said. "If it wasn't for (Gertkin and Criebaum), we would not be where we are today."

All Fall Down has become a staple of the St. Louis rock scene and has replaced cover songs with nearly all original material during its live sets, tremendous achievements for a local band that has yet to celebrate its two-year anniversary. While the band is aggressively pursuing a promising future, it also takes the time to enjoy the moment.

"This is fun for us," Mikoff said. "Sure, I want to be known. We would love to be rock stars and do this for a living. It may or may not happen, but we still have fun doing what we do."

All five members currently have "day jobs" to keep the bills paid. Holland works as a carpenter, Podhorn is a machinist supervisor, McDonald is an adjustor with a local factory, Dunning is a landscaper and Mikoff is an assistant manager at a local grocery store chain.

All Fall Down also will be performing alongside The Sick Puppies and New Translation for the Pointfest Eve show at Harrah's VooDoo Lounge on Friday. The $5 cover is waived for anyone who has a ticket to the following day's Pointfest show.

A "mouse race" fund-raiser to cover CD release costs will be held Saturday, June 20, at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Wood River. The event for ages 21 and up will include free drinks, mouse roulette, 50/50 tickets and basket raffles.
