Airline Crew Locked A Woman In Bathroom After She Vomitted Midflight
American Airlines crew members reportedly locked a black woman inside the airplane’s bathroom Thursday night over fears of Ebola after she vomited on the flight.
The woman remained in the lavatory for the last 45 minutes of the trip from Dallas to Chicago, according to the Houston Chronicle, and her carry-on luggage was wrapped in plastic and taken with her when she was carted off by medical personnel.
Passenger Martha Selby, University of Texas at Austin professor, says the woman was prompted to reveal her recent travel history and flight attendants blocked off the back of the plane with a red seat belt, preventing access to the bathroom.
Selby believes the crew members overreacted and were motivated to take such extreme measures by racial profiling.
She said:
"If I had puked on the plane, would they have they done that to me? I’m a 60-year-old white woman with gray hair. No, they would not have."
The passengers were told to remain seated when the plane landed so emergency workers could escort the woman, believed to be in her 40s, off the aircraft.
Although those travelling to and from Dallas are most likely on edge about Ebola — both of the infected nurses flew out of the Texas city after contracting the disease — American Airlines spokeswoman Michelle Mohr is adamant that this situation had nothing to do with heightened fears.
"There were no concerns related to Ebola. Our crew saw a very sick woman that probably had food poisoning or something. She was so sick that she asked to remain in the lavatory for the duration of the flight. This was just a sick passenger, and we took care of her. Our crew did the right thing."
