I thought this was common knowledge. I didn't know about the bull's semen, but I knew about the crystal meth bit. I'm pretty sure it was invented to create a super energetic, aggressive, violent, alert, always-awake breed of soldiers.

They've had drugs since the beginning of our species basically! Since there are a lot of natural things like plants that can make you high, I guess once someone stumbled across one accidentially they kept doing it and told other people, etc.

Even other species of animals have been observed essentially getting high (like dolphins and other primates). I think there's clips of some on Youtube.

Amphetamines were very common back then; they were given to soldiers. Cocaine was a medical drug.
