A weekend major underground electric fire has caused widespread power outages for much of the West end of Downtown Calgary. It has forced up to 5,000 residents to find another place to spend their thanksgiving. More than 2,100 businesses have also been effected.
Power is not expected to be restored until Thursday at the earliest and some could have to wait until Saturday!
2 apartment buildings were evucated for carbon monoxcide concerns. Many don't even have water pressure and are forced to hike up 20 to 30 flights of stairs in the dark!
The city has restored power to traffic lights in time for the Tuesday rush hour commute. (They had to use generaters to accomplish this.) Some C-Train stations are also being powered by generators.
The Calgary Courts Centre is closed until October 16 also due to power outages.
