Later in the interview, Cowell returns to the subject of X Factor in the U.S. suggesting that with time and a bit of luck the show could have been a huge success. “I think if they’d stuck with it and I’d had a bit more confidence, I would have turned that show around in a couple of years. I would have just kept on banging away, banging away. You get one lucky year with casting, you get a One Direction, and the whole thing turns on its head.”

The shade towards The Voice & Rising Star

Gimmicks weren't the problem - the problem was how the live shows were handled:

- Having to take a break because of Baseball
- Always bringing four acts to live shows instead of three, then always bringing back a wildcard
- Double eliminations almost every show
- A judging panel that was never 100% flowing correctly
- Terrible judges as well
- The public voting for winners with no marketability (Melanie & Tate)

The problem is that people in the US/Canada just aren't interested in singing competitions. No one would admit to watching it, it doesn't matter how good it is.

Please. It really is one of the better singing shows. I only like The Voice because of the Judges.

Why? Why is he still trying? X Factor flopped hard in the US, nobody watched the third season. The whole format was terrible, the eliminations, the judges and everything...

I agree that X Factor is the only format that works (Idol does too I guess). But XF US was plagued with problems, the scheduling was horrible the execution of the live shows were sloppy. The constant change of panel didn't give the audience a chance to adapt to a panel. And the bragging of 20 million + meant the show was doomed before it even began, like those ratings are practically unheard in the Internet era.

FOX was also the wrong network for the show, they already had American Idol, having another singing show on the same network was over saturation and did actually hurt AI slightly too. It's a shame I really liked the final judging panel even though Paulina was slightly crazy and they produced a great winning act in the final season. Some of the runner ups/finalists got a great platform from the show (Fifth Harmony, Emblem3, Simone Battle

A+ judges doesn't mean superstars because they saw how that worked out with Britney, they need a panel with personality yet they also need to have some decent credentials between them. The current UK panel is flawless.
