I think the quality of films has increased significantly in the past 10 years, and consequently expectations/standards are a lot higher. I often think (about negatively reviewed, current films) "if this film had been released 20-30 years ago, it probably would have been seen as the greatest film of all time."
The industry grows more advanced each year, so I guess the critics have to move in the same direction and become more critical?
A lot of the official movie review market is run by $$$ and entertainment corporations... If the studio the movie is through is owned by a company who owns the publication the review is written in, you can bet the review will be positive.
I tend to rely on how I feel about the concept of a movie rather than on what critics say when deciding whether to see a movie and whether or not I liked it (afterward, of course). Critics have also trained the public to go into EVERY movie expecting to be disappointed, and then the self-fulfilling prophecy makes them believe it more often than not.
I'd say it depends on the genre. Every superhero movie released seems to obtain a great score (despite predictable story lines, cliched dialogues and flat characters), while comedies are panned. If the former is rated purely on certain aspects - such as visual effects, action, etc - rather than as a whole, should the same not apply for other genres as well? Personally, I think they should all be reviewed with the same set of criteria, but that's just me.
No, as I get older I actually find myself agreeing with critics more. Not to say I don't ever disagree, I like to write so for me a good movie must ALWAYS have a good storyline above all else, but it becomes easier to see why really critically acclaimed movies get such high scores as I grow more mature.

People take movies way too seriously and will spend 2h watching it and 100h analyzing it, and then act like they're better than us because they dislike everything and the masses are just too dumb to understand.
It's like, just watch the damn movie already. Either you like it or you don't, but don't spend more hours thinking of faults than you spent watching the damn thing.
