No, seriously.
In March of last year I was shocked to discover that in the United States, all toilets sold must be 1.6 gallons per flush or less. This was set by the 1992 Energy Policy Act.
That's absurd! People talk about high-capacity magazines, but what was this desire to regulate high-capacity toilets?
Here in Canada, those wimpy 1.6 gpf toilets are considered "low-flow". They're sold everywhere you can buy toilets, but they're not mandated, because that's ridiculous. Nobody likes stuff being... left behind.
This actually really ticks me off. When I push the lever, I want to send a full 3.5 gallons roaring down the tube to make sure everything's cleared away. I've seen these little 1.6s in action, and the noise is just terrible, it's a soft little burbling sound, and it doesn't inspire confidence at all. It's ineffective, really terrible. Sometimes one has to flush twice.
Another thing to consider is aesthetics: the small tanks of the 1.6s doesn't look very toilet-like to me.
The United States shouldn't be seen as weak. They're the most powerful country in the world, and they have some of the weakest toilets. China is rising, and China doesn't have a 1.6 gpf limit. I bet one could find 7 gpf toilets in China (maybe, although many Chinese use squat-toilets)!
America had better step up its bathroom game. I'm still in disbelief and was recently reminded by a thread on this site. I first noticed this while browsing m4carbine.net. A New York resident was complaining about the state of American toilets.
