Is Hispanic or Latino the correct term to refer to the group? Or both are interchangeable?

Not really.

Hispanic refers to people who were born or originated in Spanish speaking countries like Colombia.

Latino refers to people who were born in Latin based speaking countries who speak Spanish, Portuguese, and French. Which includes Brazil and Haiti.

Latino is more broad while Hispanic is specific.

Yes - although in the US 'Latino' generally refers to people of Latin American origin. Unfortunately in our Census, Hispanic/Latino is grouped together - so it's often interchangeable.

I feel indifferent towards the word Hispanic. A LOT of Spanish people I know find the word quite offensive for some reason.

When you say Spanish people, you're referring to people from Spain?
