I think the fact that she was performing for a Japanese audience (where there's a language barrier and they're already obsessed with her because she's cute, petite, American and kawai'i) gave her the confidence to take more risks (vocally) and all of them paid off.
It wouldn't hurt her to have louder backing vocals/playback though. I mean, if every other pop girl is doing it (and it's making their live vocals sound way better) then why shouldn't she?
