The way I look at it, yeah on the outside it's probably because she didn't give the old lady the extention, but I think it's about what's right and wrong. She probably wanted to give the old lady the extension, but knew if she did, she wouldn't get the promotion. So, because she cared about the promotion more than helping the old lady, she got cursed.
