Maybe you are thinking of Intersexuality or intersex? Intersexuality used when one cannot be determined as a male or female, sort of like (pseudo)hermaphrodites.
Transsexuas are those that identify with a different physical sex than the one they are born as. Transgenders are those that identify with different gender role attributes than they are socially born into. No one can change your gender identity, that only you can control, and if you do not feel gender appropiate, then you would be a transgender. In this case, the term transsexual is used because she felt like a female despite being born as a male, and instead of just acting what would be seen as feminine, she wanted to be a female physically. With the hormone replacement therapy, they changed the estrogen/testosterone levels to what would be appropriate for a female.
