I can relate to this! Often when I share my opinions on ATRL people are pressed however I keep sharing and caring... but according to research, many social media users refrain from commenting on contentious issues both online and off!

Social media, like Twitter and Facebook, has the effect of tamping down diversity of opinion and stifling debate about public affairs. It makes people less likely to voice opinions, particularly when they think their views differ from those of their friends, according to a report published Tuesday by researchers at Pew Research Center and Rutgers University.
The researchers also found that those who use social media regularly are more reluctant to express dissenting views in the offline world.

While the Internet appears to be chock full of strong opinions, it seems that what you’re hearing are the voices of a vocal but small minority. For the most part, social media users are reluctant to alienate their Facebook friends or Twitter followers.
The connectivity that social media affords its users is generally taken with a hefty grain of salt — after all, you’ve worked so hard to build up your friend base, so why make them angry with a contentious post?
Anecdotal, but it guess my friends and I don't follow this pattern at all (I guess we are the small minority). They state their opinions, regardless if anyone agrees with them or not. Why hide what you think or feel because others might have a different view? Silly.
I think on sites like twitter and facebook I'm more refined because I have actual people I know and care about viewing my content, so I don't want to offend anyone.
I don't love any of you ATRL thots tho, so iDONTCURR what I say on here.
