Maleficent Takes #2 Spot Worldwide
This week
Maleficent has officially surpassed
X-Men: DOFP at the worldwide box office, which makes it the #2 movie of the year so far.
Angelina Jolie's return to the big screen has proven itself to be an ENORMOUS succes. It's at #4 of the North American box office with $237 million in the bank and is about to hit $750 million worldwide. Now
Maleficent's run at the box office is coming to an end, it looks like its final tally will end somewhere between $750 and $770 million.
At this point Maleficent is locked for a spot in the Top 5 at the end of the year. The only big releases that seem to have a chance to gross more are
Interstellar,
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 and
The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies. Of course there could be a breakout hit like
Frozen. Nonetheless it's a big achievement for the film AND Angelina Jolie, more so because
this film has been sold exclusively on Angelina's name and is, after the second Hunger Games installment, the biggest female-lead movie of all time.
