Was Avril's 'Smile' Too Lyrically Explicit to Smash?
'Smile' - a surefire hit. How did it flop, stalling at #68 on Billboard Hot 100.
The video is about to be Vevo certified.
Why did it flop? My theory is the lyrics were too explicit to be played on radio in the first verse, but also in the second verse she talks about date rape, and in the bridge again there's 100 swear words Why did Max Martin, Avril and RCA allow for such explicit material in a so obvious single of Goodbye Lullaby. What kind of stupid marketing team did Avril have back in her 2011 era.
Smile is pure perfection, I've ripped that play button hundreads of times
Its that kind of song that never gets tiring and always puts a smile on to your face
No. Didn't she make a clean edit anyway?
It would've smashed if it was released in like 2004, it sounded aged in 2011. Also, the verses let it down, only the chorus is slightly catchy - and imo it's just another generic pop-rock Avril song. Rock n Roll is the smash that never was
Because its her worst song EVER.
It should have never been a single, had a nonsense MV, and if RCA was any good it wouldnt allow Smile to make the album.
And not you of all people saying it had EVERYTHING to be a hit because
the song is not good, her good pop rock songs were in TBDT but that kind of sound is already dated and has nothing special, she needs a more mature sound, she needs to go full pop and stop trying with this teenage rock rebel image, but I don't know if it would work since her few fans would leave her for her new image.
